| All
material we produce for field transplanting originates from proprietary mint
line selections.
Mint propagation for customer’s orders is accomplished within our laboratory. Lab conditions offer controlled lighting and temperatures, which allow us to rapidly increase the needed quantity of plants under sterile conditions. Once these small, uniform “plantlets” have grown leaves and roots, they are moved to our greenhouses for finishing. The plantlets are transplanted into sterile, soil-less potting mix in standard nursery flats. After approximately 4 to 6 weeks, they are ready for shipping. Plant height above the root ball is approximately 3 to 5 inches, with a root mass that is 1 ¼” x 1 ½” x 2 inches |

All mint lots undergo the following before being sent to customers:
• Visual inspections by the Colorado Mint Certification Service, to confirm correct varietal identification (“true-ness to type”) and to observe for plant disease symptoms or unsanitary growing conditions.
• Independent third-party laboratories do all disease testing.
Leaf samples are tested for Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus (TSWV), Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV), and Potato Virus Y (PVY). This is done at the 0.1% level – one sample for every 1000 plants.
Stem samples are tested for the presence of mint wilt (Verticillium dahliae) – also at the 0.1% level.
Additional testing and/or inspections may be necessary on individual mint lots if state quarantine or importation requirements dictate. A state phytosanitary certificate is usually required in these cases, issued by the Colorado Department of Agriculture. Examples include:
• Idaho and Utah require testing for an additional mint wilt strain, Verticillium albo-atrum.
• Idaho requires inspection for mint root borer (Fumibotys fumalis) and mint stem borer (Pseudobaris nigrinam).
• California (and many other states) now have quarantine laws for Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica ). All our mint is now being produced in greenhouses that have been retrofitted and are certified as being Japanese beetle-free.
