For decades, meristem culture has been used to free plants from systemic diseases, especially those caused by viruses. The meristem process involves the cutting of a 0.25 mm shoot tip with the aid of a dissecting microscope and the regeneration of whole plants from this microscopic cutting.
At Summit Plant Laboratories, Inc., we have applied heat therapy, chemotherapy, and meristem culture to arrive at disease-indexed mother plants. Many of the plant species we work with have been treated, including potato, carnation, impatiens, and sugar beets. Our services provide an opportunity for field and nursery growers to obtain clean stocks, while being assured that their selected plant materials remain proprietary. Our clean-up work is not vertically integrated with the development and sale of our patented plant varieties, as is the case with most large commercial plant tissue culture labs.
