Product Description

Minitubers

All nuclear seed is produced in our greenhouses from plants that are propagated within our laboratory. Seed potato crops are generally harvested between May and December, and placed in cold storage units until ready for shipping the following spring.

We offer two types of minituber products:

* Larger sized seed that is sold by the pound:

For seed sold by the pound, the material is generally between 1" and 2 ½". For customer convenience, we sort our seed into two size categories – medium and large. Medium is generally 10 to 30 grams in size, large is generally 30 to 60 grams in size. We do not individually count orders that are sold by the pound.

* Smaller sized seed that is sold by the piece:

For seed sold by the piece, the material is generally between ½" to 1" in diameter. The minimum size is ½” in diameter. For customers who order by the piece, we manage the crop so that the tubers will hopefully stay within this small size category. We hand count all tubers when an order is placed by the piece. If necessary, medium (or even large) inventory may be counted to complete the order.

Field Transplants

Like our minitubers, field-ready plants are also grown from laboratory propagated material. Once these laboratory “plantlets” have generated a few leaves and small roots, they are ready to be moved into our greenhouses for finishing. Sterile, soil-less potting mix and standard sized nursery flats are used. After approximately 3 to 4 weeks within the greenhouse, they are suitable for shipping. Plants have a height above the root ball that is approximately 4 inches and a root mass that is 1 ¼” x 1 ½” x 2 inches.

Cultivar List

The lines listed below are currently in our lab repository. Some of these lines may not be available due to private grower selections or exclusive contracting. Some varieties have US Plant Variety Protection (PVP) either applied for or granted. Unauthorized propagation of these varieties is prohibited. New varieties are being developed and released regularly. We can usually obtain these lines through state certification labs, breeding programs, or other approved sources. Contact us if you are interested in a line not listed.

Testing & Certification

Our potato minitubers and the plants that produce them are rigorously tested at levels higher than those required. The Colorado Potato Certification Service performs all disease testing and inspections.

Below is the current testing and inspection protocol that we follow:

• Laboratory (“clone bank”) material is tested annually for the following:

Potato viruses A, M, M-Idaho, S, X, Y ,
Potato Latent virus (Pot LV, formerly Red LaSoda Virus ),
PLRV (potato leafroll virus),
PSTV (potato spindle tuber viroid),
Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. sepedonicus ( Cms – bacterial ring rot),
Erwinia carotovora subspp. atroseptica and carotovora ( Erw – Black leg).

Testing is done at the 100% level – each plant that will be propagated during the year is tested prior to increase within the lab.

• Greenhouse material undergoes the following:

First visual inspection by the Potato Certification Service. This is done early, usually in the first third of the crop cycle. Inspectors look for correct varietal identification based on vine and leaf morphology. Crop uniformity is observed to look for possible variety mix. Overall plant health, disease symptoms, and general greenhouse conditions (sanitation, weeds, insects, etc…) are noted.

Disease testing is done between 1st and 2nd inspections. Leaf samples are tested for PVA, PVM, PVS, PVX, PVY, PLRV, and PSTV. Sampling is done at the 1% level – 1 sample per 100 plants.

Second visual inspection is done late in the crop, generally in the last third of the crop cycle. Varietal identification is confirmed based on tuber morphology. Overall plant and greenhouse conditions are also observed.

• After harvest, 1% of tubers (one tuber per 100 plants) are tested for bacterial ring rot (Cms), black leg (Erw), and late blight (Phytophthora infestans).

Colorado certification for nuclear material stipulates a zero tolerance for all disease testing (i.e., the crop will not be certified with any positive test result). Additionally, rejection of lots can be based on other diseases or conditions that may seriously affect seed quality.

The purpose of this table is to express equivalency of terms used by various certification agencies for seed potatoes harvested from a series of successive field plantings. For specific criteria relating to disease tolerances and other requirements, the reader is referred to the certification regulations of the agency in question.
The first field planting utilizes laboratory tested stocks which may be tissue cultured plantlets, greenhouse produced minitubers, stem cuttings or line selections. Contact agencies for details as to types of stocks planted in their program
Term used by agency for seed potatoes for a particular year in the field: C=certified, E=elite, F=foundation, N=nuclear, U=Ulhlein, PE=pre-elite, G=generation
If lots originate at Cornell-Uihlein Farm, the first three generations (G1-G3) are also designated by a "U" to denote source.
