Last year saw some of the biggest changes for Summit Plant Laboratories, Inc. in many years. After 13 years in leased laboratory space, SPLI moved into a newly constructed lab building on the property where the greenhouse space utilized by SPLI is located. In addition, a 6,500 square foot Nexus Vail greenhouse was built on newly acquired land adjacent to our present greenhouse facilities. Our planting space now totals 21,000 square feet that is in production 12 months each year. This new greenhouse space allows us to end an overflow leasing agreement at another production facility and improve quality control for all of our greenhouse-produced products. All production facilities for plant products from SPLI are now produced at the same site for the first time in 13 years.
By the end of 2003 it also became known that co-founder Tom Smith was ready to retire from Colorado State University where he had been Director of Plant Growth Facilities for 6 years and return to Summit Plant Laboratories, Inc. He will work part-time as a Research Scientist for SPLI. We can look forward to creative leadership in the area of plant production optimization, improved customized equipment, and new growing systems.
All of these changes will contribute to product quality, cost savings, and disease risk management. The high-quality, high-performance products that our customers have come to expect will be even more secure. New enhancements through crop management and storage are in the planning that will make products from Summit Plant Laboratories, Inc. a better value than ever.
